Australian Families: How We Play

The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne coordinate a quarterly national survey administered online, to represent the Australian population’s views on contemporary issues facing our children and their health.

The RCH National Child Health Poll highlights the voices of Australian families, putting them at the centre of the research, and involving them in conversations about their children’s health from birth through adolescence.

A recent poll report from February 2023 shines a spotlight on how Australian families and children play, and how this is crucial for a child’s health and wellbeing. The poll asked parents about their children’s play habits and behaviours, as well as their beliefs about play.

While 94% of parents surveyed agreed that play is important for brain development and physical wellbeing, a staggering 61% often find it difficult to do, or even boring, and 58% would like to know more about how to play with their little ones.

Would you put yourself in this category? That’s where we come in!

Words Grow Minds breaks down the research, showing parents and carers of young children how engaging in the simplest activities and interactions with your child has the power to set them up for life. Explore the site to find ideas and tips for how to get the most out of the early years.
